 Cowboys & Angels

Cowboys & Angels is a new country band consisting of a powerful 17-year old lead singer named Sunshine, her 18-year old fiddler/dj brother, Sterling, their mother Sue, also known as Sue Powell, and their father, Rod.  With a track record of harmonies and hits in their background, Sue and Rod discovered that their son and daughter did not fall "far from the tree", and it was inevitable that they would come to form a band.  The result of their combined efforts is Cowboys & Angels.

Cowboys & Angels write and perform their own music.  Cutting-edge electronic sounds with fiddle, banjo, guitar, and cyrstal-clear harmonies, create a fresh sound like no one else.

The center of the group is Sunshine, an electrifying singer with incredible range and vocal abilities.  The talent that she brings to the group must be experienced to be believed.  Sunshine is a prolific songwriter, having either written or co-written the majority of the band's original material.  She also plays guitar, saxophone, ukulele, and is the undeniable lightning-rod for the group's intensity.

Sterling brings a bold array of electronic rhythm and energy to the band's music.  His "stompin' fiddle" redefines the traditional and interweaves old with new.  In addition to fiddle, he plays saxophone, ukulele, and adds vocals.  Sterling is currently a student at Middle Tennessee State University in the Recording Industry program, and in his spare time, performs as a renowned regional dj, creating and arranging his own music.

In addition to their musical work leading up to Cowboys & Angels, Sterling and Sunshine are veteran performers, having spent the past ten years building up a resume' of modeling and acting appearances for national advertisements, commercials, videos, and movies.

Sue and Rod are no newcomers to the music industry.  Sue scored numerous chart-topping records including 4 national number ones with a vocal group on RCA Records, toured internationally, and co-hosted a nationally syndicated TV show.  Sue also received  honors including multiple CMA, ACM, and CMT nominations, appeared in numerous performances on the Grand Ole' Opry, and was named as one of the outstanding women of country music.  In Cowboys & Angels, she brings her firey spirit, unique musical vision, production skills, hammer dulcimer, mandolin, and her signature harmony sound to the mix.

Rod grew up touring with his brothers while charting bluegrass hits in the eastern U. S.  His group included appearances on Jamboree USA in Wheeling, WV, and Jamboree in the Hills.  An avid fan of all things banjo and Telecaster, Rod ignites the group with his hard-driving grooves, leads, and bluegrass "pedal" harmonies.

Based out of the Nashville, Tennessee, area, this new act transcends generations, and strikes a universal chord with its rock-solid harmonies and unbridled energy.  As described in the band's song "Lassos and Halos", Cowboys & Angels is comin' to your town!

I don't know what I am...but I'm pretty sure  it isn't normal, and that sounds wonderful to me.

I thank God every day for allowing me to live the life that I have.  I'm a cheerleader and I'm also in marching band.  I play saxaphone, guitar, ukulele, and piano.

Singing is my greatest passion though.

This is just my big adventure, and I love every second of it.

Life is a song, so play it  louder.

Sometimes my parents think I'm crazy because I make them stop the car to pick wild daisies from the side of the road.  I  put them in my hair.

When I was a little girl I would pretend that whenever I went outside to sing, the birds were singing along with me.  Sometimes I still imagine what it would be like to fly with them and sing their songs.

I have a strange obsession with antique stores, cats, and the sky.  In all honesty, I wish I had 100 cats.  But, I could just write a song about having 100 cats and that would be just as good, ha ha.

I'm 17 years old and I love music

Every year I make home-made perfume with the honeysuckle from our woods.

I love to climb the pine trees in our back yard, chase wild animals, and catch lightning bugs.  Mosquitos stick to me like magnets, but I don't mind because looking at the sky is worth it.

My favorite thing to do is soak in the world around me and write songs about it.  The good, bad, and the beautiful.

HI! I'M SUNSHINE

Yes,  that is my real name.

Hi, I'm Sue.  I was born in Tennessee.  I love slammin' screen doors, rockin' chairs, and my favorite..... chocolate covered raisens with popcorn.  I live with my family on an enchanted land with woods, winding paths, and a treehouse.  One-hundred fifty Christmas trees line the border of our land for privacy.  We planted each one ourselves.  The pastureland is laced with yellow daffodils in the spring.  This year we're going to plant a weeping willow tree for the daffodils.  A large momma deer and her two spotted fawns hang out in our back yard with the rabbits and the squirrels and the bluebirds.  We have a huge ground hog that I was really fond of until it chewed up the rug on my front porch!

I like to clean house because when I'm finished I get to decorate and rearrange things to make it look pretty.  I used to climb a ladder and sit on my roof when I lived on Old Hickory Lake.  The roof is too steep to do that where we live now.  My greatest frustration in life is having so many ideas and being limited to sharing them because of the level of technology required to put them out there.  Am I the only one that feels this way?

My favorite book besides the Bible is "The Treehouse Book" by David Stiles.  If I could give a word of advice it would be "don't put all of your eggs in one basket".  I like taking nothing and making something out of it.  My latest design was inspired by the name of our band.  I cut strips of checked gingham fabric in different sizes and tied them on old wire from my friend's barn and shaped it into angel wings.  Sunshine is wearing them on the CONTACT page of our website.  I'm very, very, very,  scared of bears!  The inspiration that comes from creating is my high.  I'm writing a book called "Sweeter Than Sugar".

When I was twenty years old music took me on a magical ride.  I traveled on a tour bus that was custom-built for the vocal group I was in.  We played sold out coliseums .  My tiny room had velvet furniture and a white porcelain sink with burgandy and pink flowers painted on it.  We were recording artists for RCA and we sounded like a choir of heavenly angels.  One year we toured so much that we spent more time in an airplane than on the ground.

I thought my life was over when I was diagnosed with a neurological voice disorder and had to stop singing, which also meant never seeing most of you again.  That was the saddest day of my life.  The happiest day of my life was when I married Rod Scott, and Sterling and Sunshine were born.  As they grew Rod and I taught them what we knew about music and in the process I discovered that I still had a voice.  It was just different than it used to be.  My confidence grew right along with the kids,  and our family harmonies began to surface.  Sunshine bounced right into the lead singer position and Sterling began adding a brazen edge of carefree creativity to the band.  We began writing our own songs and evolved into  "Cowboys & Angels".  So far in my life, the most important thing I've learned is that with God all things are possible.

If I could have one wish it would be that one day music would bring you and me back together again. .

                                                       LOVE, SUE

Hey, I'm Sterling!

I am a fiddler and dj, both in the band, and on my own. You may know me as Sterfry! I enjoy making and performing music, especially live.  I love making something completely out of context fit right into a song or solo.  My major is recording industry, with an emphasis on audio production.  Come on out and see us live for something completely different!

Hi I'm Rod.  I love playing guitar and banjo, especially songs with a bluegrass flavor.  My passion is getting just the right amount of twang  and tone out of a Telecaster with a Fender amp.  Nothing's sweeter than a punchy electric guitar lead!  I guess I really started playing at about age 2 1/2, when I saw my uncles playing music on my Grandparents' back porch.  I found an old Harmony mandolin with only one string, and played along with them until I wore a nice big blister on my thumb.  My two younger brothers soon caught fire with me, and we formed a band fanning my love for music and for performing.

Someone once asked me backstage, "Are you doing this for the fame or the money"?  I told them, "neither".  I play because I've  felt led all of my life in this direction, and feel that I am best serving the purpose God set out for me when I am on stage, reaching people, and helping them in that moment, to have a better day.

I am an avid runner, as it is fun and helps with my vocal and playing stamina.  My belief has always been that come show time, "when it is on, it is on", and I had better be ready to give the audience my all.  It is always a great honor for me to meet fans, and to learn a little more about each person whose path we cross.  I would hope to meet and speak with you someday, if our paths should cross on down the road.
